Getting in on a US passport
Since 15 September 2026, US passport holders get 30 days visa-free for tourism (cut from 60), with a cap of two land-border entries per year under the exemption. A one-time 30-day extension at an immigration office (form TM.7, 1,900 baht) is reported to still be available at the officer's discretion, but Thai Immigration hasn't confirmed it for the new rules. You must complete the free Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) at tdac.immigration.go.th within 3 days before you arrive.
Staying longer
The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is a 5-year multiple-entry visa for remote workers and people doing Muay Thai, cooking or similar courses: 180 days per entry (extendable once by 180), proof of 500,000 baht (about $16,000), $400 fee at the Washington embassy. Age 50+ can use the O-A long-stay visa with 800,000 baht in a bank or 65,000 baht monthly income plus health insurance.
What a month costs
Lean: about $1,050 a month. Comfortable: about $1,380 a month. One person, rent included.
Bangkok. Numbeo (updated 27 Sep 2026): single-person costs $705 excl. rent + 1-bed outside centre $345 (low) or city centre $676 (comfortable).
Where to base yourself
Bangkok
Main international airport, the best hospitals and the biggest job and expat base; a 1-bed outside the centre runs about $345 a month on Numbeo.
Chiang Mai
Smaller and cheaper than Bangkok (1-bed outside the centre about $290 on Numbeo) with a large remote-worker community and its own airport.
Pattaya
Beach city about two hours by road from Bangkok's main airport, with a long-established retiree community and plenty of condos to rent monthly.
Heads up
Count your days: the visa-free stay dropped to 30 days in September 2026, and overstays bring fines, detention, deportation and re-entry bans. Drug penalties are extremely harsh (long prison terms, even death), and insulting the monarchy can bring up to 15 years per offense.
