Getting in on a US passport

US passport holders enter visa-free for 30 days. You can extend at the Bureau of Immigration in steps (first extension up to 29 more days), up to 36 months in total; no major entry-rule changes for Americans in 2025-2026.

Staying longer

Many long-stayers simply keep extending the tourist visa (up to 36 months). The SRRV retiree visa now starts at age 40 (lowered from 50 in 2025) with a bank deposit of $15,000 to $50,000 depending on age and whether you have a pension; a digital nomad visa exists on paper (2025) but only for countries that offer Filipinos the same, so US eligibility is not confirmed.

What a month costs

Lean: about $870 a month. Comfortable: about $1,130 a month. One person, rent included.

Manila. Numbeo (updated 12 Sep 2026): single-person costs $587 excl. rent + 1-bed outside centre $281 (low) or city centre $539 (comfortable).

Where to base yourself

Metro Manila (Makati / BGC)

Where the nonstop LA flights land; Makati and BGC are the most walkable, English-friendly business districts, but rent is the highest in the country.

Cebu City

Second-largest international airport (Mactan-Cebu), cheaper than Manila (1-bed outside the centre about $305 on Numbeo), and short hops to islands and beaches.

Dumaguete

Small university city on Negros with an established retiree crowd, slower pace and lower rents than Manila or Cebu, and daily flights to Manila.

Heads up

Don't bring any marijuana, CBD or hemp products, not even a small amount: it can be charged as drug trafficking with a possible life sentence. Extend your visa at Immigration before day 30; overstays mean fines and, past 6 months, an Emigration Clearance Certificate before you can leave.
